15 of Gothic master Albrecht Dürer’s woodcuts…that will help you sew

Albrecht Durer Self-Portrait

Albrecht Durer’s self-portrait

Albrecht Dürer is probably history’s most famous printmaker, and his eerie Christ-like self-portrait hints at the quality of most of his work. Though he wasn’t always Gothic, his woodcuts, prints, drawings, and paintings from the early 1500s frequently feature violent and apocalyptic imagery (or at least spookily intricate work).

So that’s why he’s the perfect person to help you sew.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s epic Dürer collection includes his many embroidery patterns. Yes, embroidery patterns.

These patterns were woodcuts that could be used to help sew intricate embroidery. The 15 patterns use the artist’s intricate style to help make very pretty designs, which we like to imagine on a particularly gothic duvet cover.
