Fast food geography: Discover Saint Martin through Domino’s

You’ll need all the toppings when you learn about Saint Martin through Domino’s. But pizza’s the perfect meal to learn a few facts about this island country.

Saint Martin is split in two

The Caribbean island of Saint Martin is actually split into two countries—the French Saint Martin and Dutch Sint Martin. For the rest of this article, we’ll stick with Saint Martin, but we’ll really mean Sint Martin or Saint Maarten, because all of the Domino’s are in the Dutch half of the country.

Both sides of the island are best thought of as constituent countries, similar to the relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States. For that reason, however, you’ll find Dutch names spotting the island—one Domino’s is located at Princess Juliana airport, named for Juliana of the Netherlands.

Tourism is the dominant industry

As a beautiful island, Saint Martin is a tourist haven where about 85% of citizens work in tourism. That’s the reason that the entire island, with a population of just 77,000, has four locations in Saint Martin.

It’s also why Domino’s helps sponsor a “Bon Voyage” party for graduates, since many students go overseas to continue their educations.

You’ll buy your pizza with florins

Want to get a medium one topping pizza? You’ll pay with florins.

That’s the currency of Dutch Saint Martin, and it comes from the Netherlands Antillean guilder (the French side of the island uses the Euro). Soon, however, it will be replaced by a new Caribbean currency.

That said, the local Domino’s would probably take a U.S. dollar.
