Go Planet! Answers to the six most common questions about the Captain Planet theme song

Let’s be honest—the thing you remember most about Captain Planet is the theme song. But you have questions. We’re here to answer them.

Q: Who wrote the Captain Planet theme song?

Nick Boxer

Producer Nick Boxer wrote the lyrics to the song and it was composed by Tom Worral. If Boxer looks familiar, there’s a reason—he was the model for the Captain.

Q: Wait. I heard Phil Collins wrote the theme song. Is that true?

There’s no evidence that Collins wrote the theme song or was involved in any way.

Q: How did the theme song come about?

After Ted Turner asked for a “superhero for the planet, called Captain Planet,” development of the cartoon began. Boxer says a bunch of alternate theme songs were tested, but they were all bad and repetitive. One particularly bad option chanted, “We’ve got white people, we’ve got black people, we’ve got green people, we’ve got yellow people.”

Boxer decided to write the lyrics himself and when producers wanted more repetition, they emphasized “Captain Planet, he’s our hero, gonna take pollution down to zero.”

Q: What was the theme song called?

Technically, it’s the end credits song. The opening credits were narration that explained all the characters’ powers and the show’s premise. The song we all know played at the end of each episode. You can see the opening credits at the beginning of this episode.

Q: What are the lyrics to the Captain Planet theme song?

The full lyrics, including James Coburn as the evil Looten Plunder, are:

Kwame: “Earth!”

Wheeler: “Fire!”

Linka: “Wind!”

Gi: “Water!”

Ma-Ti: “Heart!”

All: “Go Planet!”

Captain Planet: “By your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!”

Chorus: “Captain Planet, he’s our hero, gonna take pollution down to zero. He’s our powers magnified, and he’s fighting on the planet’s side.

Captain Planet, he’s our hero, gonna take pollution down to zero. Gonna help him put asunder bad guys who like to loot and plunder.”

Looten Plunder: “You’ll pay for this Captain Planet!”

All: “We’re the Planeteers, you can be one too, cause saving our planet is the thing to do. Looting and polluting is not the way. Hear what Captain Planet has to say!”

Captain Planet: “The power is yours!”

Q: Are there other versions of the song?

Captain Planet aired around the world. Here’s the theme song in German.
