Listen to a track from Maya Angelou’s calypso album

Maya Angelou, perhaps best-known as the author of I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, had an eclectic career outside of her poetic and literary pursuits.

Among other things, Angelou toured as a singer, had an ad hoc dance troupe with Alvin Ailey, and was a calypso performer. Her first album, Miss Calypso, included many calypso-flavored tracks, and it also inspired her name change from her birth name, Marguerite Johnson, to Maya Angelou.

The album was reissued as a CD in the 90s and you can still track down a copy.
