See the epic flyer for Sugar Hill Gang’s first Rapper’s Convention
Ever wonder where hip hop began? The first Rapper’s Convention might be a good place to start.
This flyer, culled from Cornell University’s impressive Hip-Hop collection, shows an early hip-hop event including the Sugar Hill Gang (the artists behind Rapper’s Delight), Grandmaster Flash, and a smattering of other pioneering acts. You’ll notice that other artists mingle with the rappers, because hip-hop was so new that it still mixed with funk, soul, and even disco.
By the 1981 convention, some of these artists were already well on their way—Sugar Hill released Rapper’s Delight in 1979, when it soared to the top of the charts.
