The day Iggy Pop’s mom made him get a haircut
When Iggy Pop was growing up in Michigan, he didn’t have much money. That led to a difficult deal: his mom said she’d buy him an organ if he got a haircut. Despite the harrowing experience, he went on to lead The Stooges (usually shirtless).
As recalled in Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, when he was in Michigan, Iggy Pop was still known as James Osterberg Jr. He formed The Stooges with Ron Asheton, who said that Iggy’s haircut (when his mom wasn’t paying for it) made him look like “an escaped mental patient.”
Iggy got his name because he shaved his eyebrows and it reminded the band of a friend named Jim Pop who had lost all his hair. Though the band ended up leaving the Midwest, Iggy first learned how to tease an audience when he saw Jim Morrison play at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
