The game Operation was originally about life in the desert
Next time you play Operation, remember that it was originally a frightening eco-simulator (or something like that). The game started as Death Valley.
John Spinello sold his college project to a game manufacturer for $500 and a promise of a job. As in Operation, players used a metal probe, but they dragged it across an electrically charged desert. When Milton Bradley bought the game, they kept the gameplay but changed the name.
In case you’re curious about who ended up going under the knife, that poor, sick soul in Operation has a name. He’s called Cavity Sam. Previously nude in the OR, in today’s game he wears boxers while going under.
